padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"720\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, Strava along with MapMyFitness and Endomondo have announced automatic sync with Garmin Connect.\u00a0 This means that your activities will now (or soon in some cases) automatically show up on those three platforms, should you choose to enable it.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these partnerships, but in particular Strava, have been worked on behind\u00a0the scenes since almost the beginning of the year \u2013 so it\u2019s great to see this finally pop out of the woodwork.<\/p>\n<p>These three companies join <a href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1pferi5\">Training Peaks and RunCoach in the automatic sync boat<\/a>, which started in June.\u00a0 Additionally, you\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1nxrwPa\">got MyFitnessPal as well<\/a> for calories synchronization, which starting last week included all Garmin devices (not just the Vivofit and FR15 anymore).\u00a0 Note however that these much anticipated announcements did however come at the expense of smaller developers and hobbyists, <a href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1mBE06E\">as I discussed in this past post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With that I\u2019ll run through those that are available today (Strava), and then some notes on both MapMyFitness and Endomondo.\u00a0 So with that, let\u2019s dive into it!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Strava Sync: How it works<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>First up we\u2019ll run through how the Garmin Connect to Strava sync works, including getting it setup and my experiences with it.<\/p>\n<p>To start, you\u2019ll go ahead and login to Strava and then click on the big orange \u2018Upload\u2019 button which will take you to a page that allows you to choose how and what to upload.\u00a0 From there you\u2019ll click on the left hand side and select \u2018Device\u2019, before then clicking \u2018Get started\u2019 below the Garmin logo:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wqGK\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"294\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4WZW\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pressing that will get you to where the magic happens, which opens up an all new dialog box that allows you to connect your account with Garmin:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wqX1\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4X00\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next you\u2019ll get a pop-up window that\u2019ll show the below page.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Tip: If you don\u2019t get said window, ensure your browser\u2019s\u00a0pop-up windows are allowed for *.garmin.com &amp; *.strava.com)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This page is coming from Garmin Connect and is asking for your permission to grant access to Strava.\u00a0 This means that later on you can always \u2018revoke\u2019 access from the Garmin Connect control panel if required.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wrKz\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"477\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4X04\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you click sign-in you\u2019ll wait a few seconds and it\u2019ll show you a confirmation page on Strava.\u00a0 It explains that activities can take a few minutes to sync from Garmin Connect.\u00a0 How you get your activity to Garmin Connect is totally up to you.\u00a0 For newer devices it\u2019d likely be via your phone (Bluetooth), or via WiFi.\u00a0 But, many Garmin devices also work just fine with USB and Garmin Express on the computer directly.<\/p>\n<p>While Garmin Express had a rocky beginning, I don\u2019t have any issues with it these days \u2013 pretty much just works for the wide assortment of devices I use.\u00a0 Either way, it doesn\u2019t much matter how you get the activity to Garmin Connect \u2013 you just need to get it there.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wqX7\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"312\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4ZFb\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So you\u2019ll go ahead and sync your device however you normally do it, from wherever you normally do it.\u00a0 For example, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1ozNJxG\">Garmin Fenix2<\/a> it can be sync\u2019d via Bluetooth Smart to your phone.\u00a0 So in my case I did it on a rock on the side of the mountain to my phone, with no PC anywhere near me.\u00a0 But that same sort of Bluetooth wireless connectivity works with other units like the cycling focused Edge 510\/810\/1000 and the running-focused Garmin FR220\/FR620.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4ZFd\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"DSC_3084\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"DSC_3084\" border=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wrKF\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_3084\" width=\"720\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next it\u2019ll automatically send the activity over to Strava, shortly after upload.\u00a0 In my case, you can see all this directly from the phone.\u00a0 On the left, Garmin Connect, and then on the right, Strava.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4X09\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"20140802_155857000_iOS\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"20140802_155857000_iOS\" border=\"0\" height=\"632\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wrKJ\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"20140802_155857000_iOS\" width=\"357\"><\/a><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4Xgp\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"20140802_160222000_iOS\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"20140802_160222000_iOS\" border=\"0\" height=\"632\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wrKP\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"20140802_160222000_iOS\" width=\"357\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note of course that if you have a unit that plugs in via USB, the automatic sync still works the same way \u2013 just with wires instead.<\/p>\n<p>Once uploaded from your device, the activity will be named the usual activity names that Strava generates. It won\u2019t change the name of the activity to match Garmin Connect\u2019s activity name (i.e. \u2018Sunday Long Ride\u2019).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4ZFf\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wqXf\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my testing, the sync was happening as fast as about 20 seconds.\u00a0 Though, one has to keep in mind that I\u2019ve been using the system that otherwise has light load on it.\u00a0 Once Strava\u2019s kazillion users join, then it may change (but hopefully not).\u00a0 As noted above in an earlier image, Strava estimates between 3-5 minutes for the sync process to complete.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4Xgv\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"259\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5ws17\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As usual, once on Strava you can go ahead and edit the name of the activity, as well as the specific bike or shoes used (or activity type).\u00a0 Note that it\u2019ll automatically assign your default bike or shoes, so you may want to double-check those settings if you haven\u2019t done so recently.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4Xgx\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"281\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wrdz\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <ins><em>(Updated)\u00a0<\/em><\/ins> Note that it will <ins>sync the previous 30 days of activities from Garmin Connect after you\u2019ve sync\u2019d your first new activity. \u00a0So once you do that it\u2019ll backfill the last 30 days of activities. \u00a0Activities older than that are not brought over. \u00a0<\/ins> <del>only sync new activities, and will not sync past activities prior to whenever you set it up.\u00a0 So if you set it up today, it\u2019s for activities uploaded going forward from today. \u00a0<\/del> You can sync <a href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1axeYAs\">older activities using this option<\/a>, though do ensure that you don\u2019t have both software tools enabled, as you\u2019ll likely end up with duplicates.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, on privacy \u2013 it\u2019ll assume your default Strava settings, not your default Garmin Connect settings.\u00a0 This means that if you have your activities set to \u2018Private\u2019 by default on Garmin Connect,\u00a0 <ins>it\u2019ll ignore that and publish anything and everything you upload to Strava. \u00a0Kinda a bummer, I wish I could easily set it otherwise.<\/ins> <del>but \u2018Public\u2019 by default on Strava, then you may want to switch Strava to \u2018Private\u2019 by default and then manually enable them for the activities you want shared \u2013 otherwise everything will get shared on Strava automatically.<\/del> <\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">MapMyFitness: Coming soon!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5ws1f\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"247\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1zN4ZFj\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next there\u2019s MapMyFitness, which is the massive MapMyEverything platform that includes the more well known sites MapMyRun and MapMyRide.\u00a0 The platform is also used by many 3rd party companies behind the scenes, such as TomTom.<\/p>\n<p>With the new sync, you\u2019ll be able to also send your Garmin Connect activities direct to MapMyFitness as well, just like Strava above.\u00a0 In talking with them, they believe the functionality should be available \u2018soon\u2019 (it sounds like a few weeks at most from my discussions with them).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll make a note in a \u2018Week in Review\u2019 post once that happens, though the process should mirror the Strava process above in terms of initial setup, then authentication with Garmin Connect, and finally automatic sync functionality.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Endomondo: Coming Soon!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox no_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5wrdH\" rel=\"gallery-35100\" title=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"241\" src=\"http:\/\/ift.tt\/1o5ws1j\" style=\"background-image: none;
